Dec. 11--Amid the gloom surrounding Thailand's export prospects for next year, one product stands out: shrimps.
Shipments are projected at 110.5 billion baht, 10 percent more than the 100.5 billion baht earned this year, according to Paiboon Ponsuwanna, president of the Thai Frozen Foods' Association.
The volume of shrimp exports is anticipated to rise by the same percentage from about 240,000 tons this year.
However, Mr Paiboon warned that the market price of shrimps would probably weaken as the product had been overpriced this year and in 1999, when Thai exporters scored a windfall because of a shortage of supplies from disease-hit competitors such as Ecuador.
Projected growth next year was built on continuous development of value-added products. Exporters had moved toward producing more ready-to-eat products to escape tough competition from India, Ecuador and Vietnam in supplying raw shrimps.
The association plans to increase cooked shrimps to 40 percent of total exports next year from between 32 percent and 35 percent this year.
