Dec. 11--While other companies lay off workers and cut production to ride out the slump, Thai Carbon Black Plc believes expansion is the best way to respond.
Expansion would have beneficial effects in the long term, said Subbaraman Srinivasan, president of the world's largest carbon black producer and an affiliate of the Aditya Birla Group.
The group has 10 subsidiaries including Thai Carbon Black, Thai Acrylic Fibre and Thai Rayon, producing chemicals, fibre, carbon black and textiles.
Mr Srinivasan said that Thai Carbon Black normally operated its Ang Thong plant at full capacity during the recession, more than doubling its production in the period and retaining all its employees.
The factory produces 150,000 tons of carbon black a year for major tyremakers Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear, Yokohama and Dunlop.
Japan, the domestic market and the rest of Southeast Asia each absorb one-third of the output.
