Dec. 10--With CP Orange poised to launch its mobile phone service this month, established rivals are shrugging off the challenge, claiming their network quality can resist inroads by the newcomer.
Advanced Info Service says that CP Orange, the mobile phone arm of the Charoen Pokphand Group and the Orange Group of the United Kingdom, is "just another competitor".
Songsak Premsuk, the executive vice-president of AIS, said that his company's nationwide network would retain market leadership. AIS claims to have four million subscribers.
CP Orange, operating a GSM1800 service, aims to become the second-biggest operator within a few years.
However, Mr Songsak said achieving the goal would not be as easy as it appeared because CP Orange would need to establish a full network.
The marketing veteran and former executive of SC Matchbox, the advertising agency of AIS, said that brand awareness would give AIS an important edge.
