Dec. 7--Owners of traditional family grocery shops will be invited to apply for franchises to operate 7-Eleven convenience stores.
CP Seven Eleven Plc planned to open 200 more outlets next year by licensing investors to operate the shops, rather than investing its own money, said Suwit Kingkaew, the company's vice-president.
The company has held seminars telling retailers how to manage franchised outlets. People attending were mainly retired and those looking for work, Mr Suwit said.
In selecting a location, the participants were told that the company preferred new outlets to be opened in tourist areas and city suburbs.
Some shops had been opened at university and college campuses where they provided practical case studies for students taking courses on retailing, he said.
After 12 years in Thailand, 7-Eleven has 1,720 shops of which 1,000 are in Bangkok. Of the total, 1,320 outlets are operated by the company and the other 400 are under franchise.
Sales revenue for this year was on heading for 18 billion baht and was projected to reach 20 billion baht next year, Mr Suwit said.
