Dec. 4--The National Wage Committee is preparing to approve rises ranging from two to seven baht a day in the minimum wages paid in 11 provinces.
Provincial panels for another 56 provinces, including Bangkok, have agreed to maintain existing wages, while officials in nine remaining provinces have not decided whether to seek increases.
The committee, representing labour officials, unions and industry groups, will meet on Thursday to consider the requested increases.
Sukhothai province has requested the highest increase, at seven baht to 140 baht a day. The other proposals are: Ang Thong: five baht to 138 baht; Rayong and Kanchanaburi: four baht to 136 baht; Chon Buri: three baht to 146 baht; Lamphun and Trat: three baht to 136 baht. Narathiwat, Krabi, Yasothon and Sing Buri: two baht to 135 baht.
The committee reviews minimum wages nationwide each year. Provincial panels, composed of labour and industry representatives, forward requests based on local economic, labour and business conditions.
Minimum wages currently are 133 baht a day for most provinces. The rate in Bangkok, five surrounding provinces and Phuket is 165 baht. Another six provinces -- Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phangnga, Ranong and Sara Buri -- have a wage of 143 baht a day.
