Dec. 4--Construction of the 7.6-billion-baht national high-speed fibre-optic network has made little headway, with just 7 percent of the work done and the completion deadline only 11 months away.
The delay could mean extra costs for the state, as well as a loss of business opportunities for the Telephone Organisation of Thailand.
The project, commonly known as SDH for the synchronous digital hierarchy technology it employs, is a crucial part of the TOT's plan to increase its capacity to six million fixed lines and introduce new value-added services.
Without its own network, the TOT must continue to lease networks from other companies such as ComLink, said an industry source who asked not to be named.
At the same time, the state agency must wait longer before it can start earning money from leasing the SDH network to businesses such as data communication providers.
Alcatel of France is the contractor for the two-part project, consisting of the SDH equipment and nearly 10,000 km of fibre-optic cable.
