Dec. 4--In a stock-for-stock transaction worth more than $1 billion, MedImmune, a biotechnology company in Maryland, announced Monday that it will acquire Aviron in Mountain View, the firm that developed a flu vaccine delivered by nasal spray rather than injection.
Executives of both companies say the planned merger will help speed Aviron's FluMist vaccine to market, perhaps in time for next year's flu season. They say the product, which will be marketed under a longstanding partnership with American Home Products, could become a blockbuster, with potential sales exceeding $1 billion a year.
