Dec. 4--Liberty Media Corp. will take a majority stake in Europe's No. 2 cable system -- extending John Malone's global reach -- through a long-awaited deal with United-GlobalCom, the Denver companies said Monday.

Yet even as Liberty announced plans to buy 76 percent of United-GlobalCom, which owns a majority of United Pan-Europe Communications, doubts swirled across the Atlantic about Malone's plan to buy another, larger cable system in Germany.

Liberty's $5 billion deal with Deutsche Telekom faces scrutiny from German regulators, and officials at the phone giant believe Liberty may back out if other pending deals fall through, …
