Dec. 3--Bangkok Airways plans to open a new airport in Trat by November next year as part of moves to create a routing network in southern Thailand, linking up with its airport hub on Samui island.
The new airport, the airline's third, would cost 300 million baht, including land worth 120 million baht, said Dr Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, the president and chief executive.
The airport will serve Ko Chang, one of the country's most popular tourist destinations, with flights to the island taking 55 minutes.
"Like Koh Samui 10 years ago, Koh Chang is an unspoiled natural island with many affordable resorts," Dr Prasert said.
The airline hopes to repeat the success of its airport in Samui which was opened 12 years ago. Like Samui airport, the new facility will accommodate small aircraft such as the ATR-72 and create a package route: Bangkok-Ko Chang-Ko Samui-Hua Hin. The company's second airport is in Sukothai.
"We want this package to allow beach-lovers to see three different types of beaches," he said.
