Q: I have 4 pounds of walnuts in my freezer that have been there for 11 months. I could not use them last year because of illness. Can I use them this season to make my nut bread and cookies? _ M.B., Akron, Ohio.

A: The nuts may have dried out slightly or picked up some off flavors, but they're safe to eat. If they have been wrapped well, they should be in good shape. If they weren't wrapped well and taste funny (try one), perk up the flavor by roasting them on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 2 to 3 minutes.
