Verizon to Test Fiber-Optic Lines in New Community in Loudoun County, Va.

Jan. 11--In a high-speed telecommunications market test, Verizon Communications will connect fiber-optic lines directly to homes in a new Loudoun County planned community.

A potential next-generation technology for fast Internet, voice and data services, "fiber-to-the-home" can offer more bandwidth than current standard methods.

High-speed residential connections commonly travel the "last mile" from fiber optic Internet lines to homes through coaxial cable TV lines or over regular copper phone wiring.

Company spokesman Paul Miller said Verizon will test the service for a year in Loudoun.
