Jan. 7--Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe has been in Thailand to drum up local investor interest in his politically troubled country while taking a new year holiday.
The president and his wife, Grace, received an elaborate welcome dinner at Le Royal Meridien Hotel in Bangkok, a far cry from the political storm back home.
His ruling party, Zanu-PF, has been accused of dubious electoral tactics and ruthless suppression of the press. His land reform programme, billed as a belated step in decolonisation of white-owned farms, has set back the farming system amid a conflict that has cost both lives and livelihoods.
