Jan. 5--Thai authorities knew that MMW Imports applied to import tuk-tuks to Britain in November 2000, Michael Williams, the company's managing director, said yesterday.

His remark raises questions on why Thai authorities only recently threatened to seek revocation of the firm's United Kingdom registration of the brand "MMW Tuk Tuk", citing the alleged grounds that the company was infringing on Thai intellectual property rights by using the word tuk-tuk in its brand.

Deputy Commerce Minister Suvarn Valaisathien has conceded that Thai authorities will be unable to take tuk-tuk out of the trademarked brand.
