Jan. 4--Efforts to prevent a British company from importing Thai three-wheel vehicles and selling them as the MMW Tuk Tuk are unlikely to succeed as the word tuk-tuk is a generic description, just like motor car, according to a Thai lawyer.

A major Thai manufacturer of tuk-tuks has been to the fore in pushing the Thai authorities into protecting the national symbol, which actually has its origins in Japan.

Michael Williams, the managing director of MMW Import, denied in an interview with the Bangkok Post that he was trying "to steal" the tuk-tuk, saying he was actually promoting a product made in Thailand.

"None of the Thai tuk-tuk manufacturers or the Thai government have made any effort to try to break into the European market yet," Mr Williams said. "At no point am I trying to take ...
