Jan. 3--A new quality standard for fragrant rice is expected to be good news for consumers, but exporters fear that increased inspections could hurt sales.
The standard for Thai Hom Mali was introduced this week to combat adulteration, which officials said was harming the image abroad of the country's premium rice. Traders who fail to meet the standard could be fined and exporters could lose their licences.
