Jan. 2--A series of rapid-fire developments in the last few weeks of 2001 have given more than a strong indication as to the way the travel industry is going to pan out this year.
With safety and security the dominant issue, the government changed visa regulations, cutting the number of visa-free countries from 58 to 37 and the number of visa-on-arrival countries from 96 to 15.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has sought to put the best possible face on the move, noting that the 52 countries still on the list generate more than 90 percent of the country's total arrivals. But the move will clearly have an impact once it is effective in a few weeks. Many of the countries removed from the list are from Latin America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa, all of which were previously being targeted as promising new markets.
