Jan. 1--Love him or loathe him, Thaksin Shinawatra is an extraordinary figure who has turned domestic politics on its head.

His Thai Rak Thai Party won a landslide victory at the polls on Jan 6, the first time in Thailand's history that a single party had won an absolute majority in the House of Representatives.

He took up the post of prime minister officially on Feb 26 with 320 seats in the Lower House, more than enough to ensure that he would be able to complete his first four-year term.
