On July 10, [1991], the President announced that South Africa had met the conditions for lifting the trade and economic sanctions contained in the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 (CAAA). Since that time, the political process in South Africa has continued forward toward non-racial democracy. The Convention for a Democratic South Africa, which held its first session December 20-21, 1991, is another definitive step toward abolishing apartheid and establishing a non-racial, multi-party democracy in South Africa. The United States will continue to assist this process.
