Feb. 6--Thailand could become a regional centre for seed production and distribution if the government steps up efforts to prevent the smuggling abroad of plant varieties and increases investment in research on new strains.
In making this point, Manas Chiarvanond, the executive vice-president of Chia Tai Co, a seed producer in the CP Group, said many multinationals in the agricultural industry had established operations in Thailand and had imported technology to produce seeds for export by using local land and labour.
For this reason, Thailand was emerging as a seed-producing hub in the region, Mr Manas said.
