Feb. 5--A former victim of widespread extortion at Thailand's major wharfs has taken the helm of the state agency in charge of the ports, vowing to stamp out the tradition of workers demanding kickbacks from traders.
Mana Patram, the new director-general of the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), said he wanted to end the notorious image of the PAT as a hub of corruption.
"This will end. I know the problem well because I was a client of the PAT. I know the PAT and used to pay kickbacks," said Mr Mana, 57, a former managing director of Mitsui O.S.K. Line.
