Feb. 5--One of my favourite movies is the 1979 classic Being There with Peter Sellers starring as Chance, a reclusive, simple-minded gardener who has lived his whole life on the estate of a millionaire. His only knowledge of the "real" outside world is through watching television. When Chance's benefactor dies, he wanders aimlessly into the streets of Washington, where he is struck by a car owned by Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine). He identifies himself as "Chance .th.th. gardener," interpreted to be his full name Chauncey Gardiner.
She takes him to her husband Benjamin's (Melvyn Douglas) home for recuperation. Chance's empty-headed pronouncements are taken to be profoundly intelligent and wisely insightful. He becomes wealthy, is treated as a celebrity in the media, and the rich and powerful, including politicians seek his advice, as he offers simplistic responses to the most difficult questions.
