Feb. 4--Even if he is never reinstated as governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Pradech Phayakvichien can be proud of having presided over the first year that visitor arrivals crossed the 10 million mark, the Sept 11 tragedy notwithstanding.
Clearly underscoring the resilience and long-term growth potential of tourism, figures released by the TAT last week showed a total of 10,061,950 visitors in 2001, up by 5.82 percent over 2000, thanks largely to a surge in arrivals in November and December from East Asia and Europe, which together comprise 82.44 percent of arrivals.
The surge more than compensated for the brief post-Sept 11 dip in October and helped Thailand exceed even the best-case-scenario target of 9.87 million arrivals that the TAT had forecast in the aftermath of Sept 11.
Indeed, the final arrivals count came close to hitting the original pre-Sept 11 target of 10.30 million. Had the attacks in the US ...
