Feb. 26--ARLINGTON, Texas--It's fast, powerful and a big boost for the University of Texas at Arlington.
The new supercomputing system, tucked in the Information Technology Machine Room at the University of Texas at Arlington, looks like a bunch of big black and silver boxes. But this $828,000 system, wrapped with a silver ribbon and unveiled Monday, is expected to put the college on the high technology map and leave UT-Arlington's outdated computer system in the dust.
The system is one of the most powerful supercomputers in Texas, said Dennis Marynick, a chemistry professor and chairman of UT-Arlington's High Performance Computing Committee.
"We've got power here and people will gravitate to it," he said. "In the past we had a computer that was not as fast as some PCs. Now that no longer applies because people will want to come here to use this."
The supercomputers exceed the computer capabilities of any other university in Fort Worth-Dallas, officials said. The Compaq AlphaServer supercomputing system is equivalent to those used by EDS, Verizon and other corporations.
The system is so fast that it can do in one day what it used to take a week to do on the old system.
