Feb. 24--RIFLE, Colo.- More than 80 years of failed attempts to economically recover oil from the mother lode of oil shale in the Piceance Basin has tempered but not stifled excitement over the newest prospect of oil shale development here.

Crowded meeting rooms buzzed with "what ifs" and "maybes" as the world's second-largest oil company hosted meetings Friday and Saturday in Meeker, Rangely and Rifle to give the public the first official glimpse at what is happening at a remote oil-shale research station in Rio Blanco County.
