Mar. 6--The Thaksin government is seeking to aggressively expand bilateral trade arrangements with major partners such as the United States, India and South Korea, while at the same time developing new markets.

But it lacks sufficient negotiators to handle complex trade talks, according to specialists in the international trade arena.

The Commerce Ministry's Business Economics Department is the main body overseeing international trade negotiations, but other ministries such as finance, industry and agriculture also play a role.

Of the 290 officials working for the Business Economics Department, 200 are directly involved in trade negotiations. Those officials have to participate in as many as 50 local and ...
