Mar. 4--The prime minister's sister is taking an ever increasing workload in her stride as she tries to put the government's populist One Tambon, One Product programme into action.

In doing so, Yaowapa Wongswasdi, 47, is becoming more powerful in the ruling Thai Rak Thai Party.

Younger than Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, she is entrusted with overseeing the party's political affairs and, although new to politics, has about 60 MPs, mostly from northern provinces, under her wing.

Her influence was reflected in her ability to help Industry Minister Suriya Jungrungruengkit be appointed as the party's secretary-general.
