SEATTLE _ Yet another research project has shown that recent, long-term use of hormone-replacement therapy raises the risk of breast cancer.
Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Group Health Cooperative and the University of Washington reported Wednesday that recent, long-term use of the hormone treatment increases the overall risk of the disease by about 70 percent. For one specific type of the cancer, the risk increases by as much as four times.
"It is a difficult time for hormone-replacement therapy. There seems to be more bad news than good coming out about it," said Dr. Emily White, senior author of the report and a Hutchinson Center scientist.
The researchers analyzed women who had used the therapy for five years or longer just before prior to the study period. Other studies have found that the risk of breast cancer disappears…
