Mar. 14--CONCORD, N.C.--Faced with lower-than-expected state revenue and a budget crunch, Cabarrus County is laying off nine workers at its Department of Social Services, cutting programs for a growing clientele.
Besides the layoffs, the county is cutting 20 temporary DSS workers and an additional 67 vacant full- and part-time positions in the department.
The $1.65 million in social services cuts -- part of $2.4 million in budget amendments approved by county commissioners Monday night -- will limit the county's ability to provide services, said DSS director Jim Cook.
