American Gem Buyers, Thailand Exporters At Odds over Sapphires.

Apr. 3--Thai gem exporters and American buyers are at odds over the quality of orange-pink sapphires, with laboratories in the United States claiming that the colour of the stones has been enhanced by using the surface diffusion technique.
However, Thai traders backed by the Gem and Jewellery Institute of Thailand also tested the stones and claimed that the colour change was caused by heat enhancement.
This technique was acceptable in the world gem market, they said, but not colour diffusion. Thailand had to make the distinction clear to buyers.
