Apr. 13--Charles River Plaza, considered a showpiece of urban renewal when it was built in the 1960s and one of the first suburban-style shopping plazas in Boston, is set for a major reconstruction that will double its commercial space and bring retail activity to a barren stretch of Cambridge Street.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority in December approved the Davis Cos.' plan for the plaza, located in the West End near the foot of Beacon Hill.

Paul Marcus, president of the Davis Cos., said financing on $160 million worth of new construction and $250 million in total costs should be in place this summer, with work to begin in the…
