Apr. 12--Each pack of cigarettes sold in the United States costs the nation more than $7 in medical care and lost productivity caused by smoking-related illnesses.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pegged the total annual cost of smoking at nearly $158 billion a year, or $3,391 per smoker. The study, released yesterday, is the first to establish a national per-pack cost. The CDC said that tobacco-related medical costs rose 42 percent from 1993 to 1998, to $75.5 billion, while economic costs averaged $81.9 billion a year because of lost work productivity.
