BASEBALL CITY, Fla. _ A year from now, will Minnesota still have one of the best young rotations in baseball? Or will Brad Radke, Eric Milton and Joe Mays be wearing different uniforms?
At this point, nobody knows. The only certainty is that the Twins avoided the contraction dragnet this year and will open the season April 1 against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
"Everywhere we've been, it's been asked: Contraction," said Ron Gardenhire, who succeeded Tom Kelly as the Twins' manager. "You know what? If we get a stadium built, something will be taken care of."
Meanwhile, the Twins and Montreal Expos continue to operate amid the specter of dissolution. Commissioner Bud Selig, publicly at least, remains committed to the elimination of two _ or more _ franchises as soon as possible.
It was a miserable off-season in both cities, particularly in Minnesota, where talk of contraction sapped the enthusiasm of last season's 85-77 breakthrough season.
"There were times when I really thought this would be the end of the Minnesota Twins," outfielder Torii Hunter said. "My team. A team that was in first place for half of last season. I was so angry at Selig, so angry at everybody.
