Aug. 5--A profit warning Wednesday caused Smithfield Foods Inc. shares to plummet, but the company may have an even bigger problem at a North Carolina plant that it dubs as the largest hog-processing facility in the world.

The National Labor Relations Board has sided with a union and filed a complaint against Smithfield, which will have to defend itself in court on Sept. 20. The original grievances were filed by a labor union that the company has tussled with repeatedly at its Bladen County, N.C., plant.

The union announced the complaints Wednesday. They accuse Smithfield and the local sheriff's department of strong-arming plant maintenance workers. The action means the NLRB's regional…
