Aug. 4--TAR HEEL, N.C. -- Smithfield Foods and its cleaning contractor face federal charges that workers at Smithfield's Bladen County pork processing plant were assaulted and harassed for their efforts to unionize.

The National Labor Relations Board issued a complaint on Friday against Smithfield and the contractor, QSI of Lumberton. The Bladen County Sheriff's Office is named in the charges as acting on behalf of QSI, but is not listed as a defendant.

The agency plans a hearing on the matter before an administrative law judge Sept. 20 in Lumberton.
