Rahal to sports cars?
Bobby Rahal is seeking to run Aston Martin's new GT racer (AW, July 26) in the American Le Mans Series. Rahal revealed he is in talks with Prodrive Engineering, which is masterminding Aston's re-entry into motorsports with the new DBR9. Team Rahal wants to become one of the three works teams Prodrive and Aston hope to have in place for the 2006 season. Rahal would be its U.S. operation, and Rahal hopes to run the ALMS as well as Le Mans.
Rahal, who competed at the highest level in sports cars as a driver, said he has talked to Prodrive. "If we go endurance racing, it is something to explore. If we were to do something, we would also go to Le Mans.'' Rahal already has links with both Ford-owned Aston Martin and Prodrive. He operates an Aston dealership in the States and he ran the Jaguar F1 team. Early last year he tried to put together a deal to run Prodrive-built Ferrari 550 Maranellos in the ALMS.
Prodrive admitted Rahal is one of the people the company is in talks with.
