Byline: CURT CAVIN
There are bound to be these kinds of days, an irritated Tony Kanaan said. But that doesn't make them easier to accept.
Kanaan was riding around the ultra-fast Michigan International Speedway last Sunday, enjoying a leader's view for all but six of the first 189 laps of the Michigan Indy 400, a 200-lap affair.
During a conversation with his Andretti Green Racing crew, the subject of Buddy Rice's fuel consumption came up. Rice supposedly was using too much and would have to make a stop before the end of the race. Then Kanaan heard something no driver likes to hear, especially with 11 laps to go: Let him go past.
"I didn't know about that, but how was I to argue?'' the Indy Racing League points-leader said.
Entering the third turn of lap 190, Kanaan gave up the fight to give Rice only his second lead of the race. Kanaan settled in behind and waited for Rice to pull off. He never did. Kanaan tried to scramble back to the lead on the final lap, but it was too late. Rice had the win.
Kanaan was furious.
