When Mercedes-Benz unveiled its 300SL in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Show in New York, a crowning automotive achievement was born.
Conceived as a purpose-built racer, the 300SL was put into production when Maximilian "Maxi'' Hoffman, a U.S.-based importer, lobbied Mercedes for a sports car to offer his clients. Between 1954 and 1957, 1400 300SL coupes were made.
The allure of the Gullwing Mercedes is as strong now as it was then, as it continues to capture the imagination of car lovers the world over. Cars from the DeLorean to the Bricklin to the company's own SLR and the Lamborghini Murcielago have been influenced by the 300SL's innovative design.
