Federal Regulators Want Cleanup Plan for Dioxin Seepage at Nitro, W.Va., Site.

Apr. 27--Federal regulators have given Solutia Inc. a week to submit a plan to clean up dioxin seepage at the former Monsanto chemical plant in Nitro.

On Friday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a letter to Solutia that requires the cleanup plan.

"It is EPA's understanding that the work-plan preparation is in the final stages and will be forwarded to both EPA and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection upon completion," wrote Jennifer Shoemaker, an EPA project manager.

In mid-March, DEP officials discovered the seep during a boat inspection of the plant.
