May 7--Trade observers in Thailand and Asia at large are mulling the likely impact of moves by the United States and Singapore to wrap up negotiations this year on a bilateral free-trade area.
If all runs to plan, the agreement will be the first of its kind by Washington with an Asian country.
The impact is expected to reshape investment in the electronics and services sectors in the region, with funds heading for Singapore ahead of other destinations, according to international trade experts.
The two countries began their negotiations late in 2000 when the Clinton administration was in power in Washington and global trade talks were at an impasse after the collapse of the World Trade Organisation's meeting in Seattle in 1999.
