May 6--Officials of Emirates Holidays, one of the Middle East's leading tour operators, call it a sleeping giant in outbound travel potential. The country they are referring to is none other than Iran, which generated 16,795 visitor arrivals for Thailand in 2001, a whopping increase of 72.38 percent over 2000.
At the moment, the Tourism Authority of Thailand considers the market statistically so small that it does not even warrant a separate listing in the arrival figures.
The numbers from Iran are lumped together under the category of Others. That, however, could soon change.
Between May 16 and 20, representatives of the TAT will be in Teheran to host a Thailand Food Festival, marking the TAT's first step to broaden its profile in Iran.
There have been only two direct flights weekly by Mahan Air from Teheran to Bangkok since June 2000. ...
