May 6--The Telephone Organisation of Thailand plans to spend about two billion baht to buy 50,000 dual-mode public handsets to replace coin-operated phones nationwide.
The TOT board has approved the 1.9-billion-baht upgrade in anticipation that the new handsets, operated by both coins and cards, will be more popular with customers and boost the state agency's revenue.
The first lot of 29,000 sets would be bought this year and the rest next year, said Olarn Pientham, a TOT senior executive vice-president.
Many of the TOT's existing 126,127 coin-operated phones are in poor condition and often malfunction. ...
