May 6--The private sector deplores the government's plan to stop funding nine industrial institutes and warns that research and development could suffer if subsidies are axed.
Suriya Juengrungruangkij, the industry minister, said last week that the ministry would stop earmarking budget funds for the institutes.
It wanted them to raise their own revenue by providing services such as information, research and technology to private companies.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has said he wants state-supported institutes to function in a more commercial manner.
