May 4--The Telephone Organisation of Thailand is preparing to purchase as many as 500,000 cellular handsets to distribute to its fixed-line subscribers and prepare for expansion of its 1900 Megahertz network.

The agency would call for bids from prospective suppliers in order to accommodate fixed-line subscribers who requested handsets in lieu of deposit refunds, said Olarn Pientham, senior executive vice-president of the TOT.

The TOT has been gathering questionnaires returned by subscribers to its service and those of private fixed-line operators TelecomAsia and TT&T Plc. Customers were asked to choose from among ...
