May 4--Gem and jewellery traders have asked the government to waive value-added tax (VAT) for the sector to help promote Thailand as a trading hub for the products.

Industry executives made their case yesterday in a meeting with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Commerce Minister Adisai Bodharamik. The premier asked the Finance Ministry to study the possible impact of a VAT cut for the industry, according to Dr Adisai.

The tax was a key barrier to lifting Thailand's profile as a gem and jewellery trading centre, said Sunee Sriorathaikul, president of the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders' Association.
