May 3--Expats in Thailand may sometimes wonder why they are not invited to parties at Thai houses as often as they would have liked, given that Thais are very friendly by nature.

In my view, the main reason is that most Thais, especially middle-class ones, are not comfortable preparing western food and tableware. They may have maids at home, most of whom are from the Northeast. While these maids may be superb cooks, especially for such dishes as som tam (spicy papaya salad that some people told me was originated from Laos), they are clueless when it comes to western meals and table arrangement.
