Jun. 3--The Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand concedes that import surcharges on steel products are not the best solution to price problems affecting local steel producers and users.
"It must be accepted that the imposition of surcharges by the Board of Investment is not completely fair. There are loopholes that leave some players in trouble while others make excessive gains," said Wikrom Vajragupta, the institute's director.
Opposition parliamentarians accused the government in the recent censure debate of lacking transparency in applying surcharges on imported stainless steel.
