Jun. 6--Imported salmon are shaping up as a new opportunity for Thai canneries, which could boost their revenue by re-exporting the product internationally.
The business is still small in Thailand as most canneries process tuna, the major raw material for the canned seafood industry. Last year Thailand exported 269,696 tons of canned tuna worth US $579.8 million or about 24 billion baht.
Sally Achaya Subphapholsiri, the managing director of Food Industry Consultants Ltd and Food Partners Co, said there was potential for Thai canneries to add salmon to their production lines without making new investment.
