Jun. 6--The Gem and Jewellery Institute of Thailand has defended itself against allegations by traders in precious stones that it has jeopardised the country's interests by yielding to American laboratories in a dispute over the properties of orange-pink sapphires.

They said Thai orange-pink sapphires were likely to fall into the diffusion category, a practice unacceptable in gem trading.
