Jul. 22--HEARD ON THE STREET: Here's a comparision you don't hear often.
"The Mac has become the AS/400 (i-Series server) of desktop computing, except for the fact that it's prettier." -- John C. Dvorak, PC Magazine columnist, from his June 17 column.
The thrust of the column was the Macintosh computer was tired and Apple should drop the line to start something new. If that wasn't a wild enoough statement, Dvorak threw in a shot at IBM's Rochester-made mainstay server, the AS/400 (which has been renamed as the i-Series).
Tim Dallman, spokesman for IBM Rochester, said the comparsion with the colorful desktop computer is valid, but the implication that the i-Series is a dinosaur is all wrong.
"Both (Macs and i-Series servers) enjoy a fanatical loyal customer base, " he said. "Very few products in the industry inspire the same level of loyalty, other than Macs."
