Jul. 1--In a relatively unnoticed but hugely significant long-term development, the Tourism Authority of Thailand last week began to wash its hands of one of its most thankless tasks: Planning and development of the country's tourism products and destinations.
Under a new system that will be eased in as of fiscal year 2002-03, budget allocations for tourism development projects will be decided on an ad hoc basis after consideration by a screening committee consisting of representatives of the Budget Bureau, the National Economic and Social Development Board, the Finance Ministry and the TAT. It will be headed by the NESDB.
The Budget Bureau has allocated 3.57 billion baht for tourism development work next year, which is more than the 3.31 billion baht being allocated for marketing. While the TAT will retain control over the marketing budget, the development money will be in the hands of the Budget Bureau ...
